The list

Furniture mode

Inez Franksen opened modus in 1964 at Wielandstraße 27/28 as a shop for contemporary furniture design. It was able to win well-known manufacturers such as Cassina, Knoll International, DePadova, Vitra, Thonet and Zanotta as partners, so that Modus soon became the top address in Berlin.

A CENTER FOR DESIGN

Through her work, Inez Franksen made friends with many designers and repeatedly invited her customers and friends to design exhibitions in the beautiful rooms on Wielandstraße, e.g. Alvar Aalto in 1976, Dieter Rams in 1980 and Achille Castiglioni in 1983. This tradition continues to this day. In this way, Modus could and can make an important contribution to the understanding of design in Germany. Modus was also a pioneer in discovering new designers and manufacturers. With great curiosity, Inez Franksen sought contact with the Swiss collections in the 1980s. Lehni, Thut, Tossa, Röthlisberger, Wogg, Zoom by Mobimex have been represented at Modus from the very beginning in Germany.

FROM LIVING ROOM TO HEADQUARTER

But not only the products, but also the target group became broader: while at the beginning the focus of modus was on sales to private customers, in the following years the so-called object area – the furnishing of offices and hotels – became an important part of the overall turnover. Many of the public buildings and company headquarters in Berlin were and are furnished by Modus.

CREATIVITY AND CONTINUITY

The continuity of the address and the concept is unique in Berlin: None of the competitors on the market can claim to have existed at the same address with the same large selection of collections and the same personal customer care for almost 50 years. Stability is also reflected in the employee structure. Some have been with Modus for decades and have seen the early days. Because the colleagues are not the usual sales consultants, but have mostly taken a different path in their past, the contact with customers is special: At Modus, you will find sociologists, lawyers, art historians, designers and interior architects in addition to commercial professions.
